Fresh Chicken!

Each year here on the farm Ruth and I enjoy raising pastured chicken meat. Tomorrow we will be processing our next batch and you have an opportunity to get fresh chicken! While not everyone has a problem with frozen meat, we do understand that there is something to be said for a fresh, never been frozen, chicken straight from the farm. You can pick up fresh chickens tomorrow (July 3’rd) from 3-6 pm. Just in time for your 4’th of July!
**Oh, and I almost forgot. Tomorrow, only (processing day special), fresh chicken is on sale for only $3.65 a pound.

Pastured Meat Chickens

Pastured Meat Chickens (…chicken does NOT taste like everything)

Do you remember what chicken used to taste like? Maybe, or perhaps you’ve never tasted real chicken before! Words can’t describe the difference between industrially produced ‘chicken’ (organically fed or otherwise) and real pastured raised chicken – there is just no comparison. When you taste one of our chickens you’ll realise that what the factory producers have been offering isn’t chicken at all. Don’t be duped. Our birds are raised in specially constructed movable pens which give them access to fresh pasture everyday. The pens are moved everyday. All the wonderful benefits of a life on pasture translate into the tastiest, healthiest chicken to feed you and your family.

Regular price is $4.00 a pound

Bulk Price: (buy 5 or more birds at once) get an extra savings of $.35 per lb.

Processing Day Special: (come the evening of a processing day 3-6pm) get an extra savings of $.35 per lb.

***Because of the high value of interest we have decided to extend our 'processing day special' through today, May 31! If you are interested in trying local, pasture raised, non-frozen chicken now is your chance! Come visit the farm today. We will be home all day.

Hope to see you soon,

~Ben & Ruth

P.S. We do have pre-orders for over 500 birds this year but they will be dispersed through the whole year. So there is plenty available now but they will be sold out!

Beef cattle winter grazing

Beef cattle winter grass grazing

It has been a dream of ours to have our beef cattle enjoy what they love best, even in winter, grazing grass. I had read about this concept years ago in a Grass-Fed Cattle book that we own. Even though we have a barn full of hay and I enjoy feeding them twice a day in the winter it's very exciting to see them grazing in January! Watch the video below.  Enjoy : )

Grass Fed Beef Available!

Want the perfect gift for your family this Christmas? A gift that will keep on giving? We have only 1 quarter beef left out of the 12 available. The cost to you is only $4.50 a pound. If you are interested please contact ASAP.

Thank you and Merry Christmas,

100% Grass Fed Beef: We currently raise Scott Highland beef cattle. Scott Highland beef is in high demand in that they provide a leaner (and therefor healthier) meat. The biggest health advantage that comes from 100% grass-fed beef is that grass-fed beef contains increased amounts of healthy omega-3 fats and two to three times more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) while also having less fat overall. CLA is a unique fatty acid associated with possible health promoting effects in obesity, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammation, and various types of cancer, especially breast cancer. Grass-fed beef has an average of three times more vitamin E (vitamin E is a natural defense against cancer, heart health, and vision). ->-> More info

Turkey

This year we are offering free-range Standard White Turkey which is raised on pasture and fed non-GMO grains. Turkeys are excellent foragers and therefore the pasture-based diet really influences the flavor and quality of the meat. Known for their generous amount of white breast meat, this turkey will make an excellent centerpiece for your Thanksgiving meal!  They are generally 15 pounds and the cost is $4.00 per pound. We do require a $20 deposit to hold your bird.

US company in Iowa churns out 100 cloned cows a year

I just read this article today. I didn’t know the USDA is allowing cloned animals for human consumption. Did you? Here are some highlights from the article.

"Each year, the company gives birth, using the cloning technique, to about 100 calves. It also clones pigs and horses."

"In 2008, the agency charged with US food safety, the Food and Drug Administration, approved consumption of meat and milk from cloned cows, pigs and goats.

But on the other side of the Atlantic, just last December, the European Commission, the European Union's executive, proposed a ban on the cloning of animals used for food and their import. That has yet to be decided."

"The US authorities have made a major mistake by not regulating it, and allowing consumption of cloned meat before long-term studies of its impact on human health, said Jaydee Hanson, senior policy analyst at the non-profit Center for Food Safety.

Mortality rates are higher than for non-cloned animals at all stages of development, and surrogate cows carrying the cloned egg have more problems during pregnancy and delivery, said Hanson."

"But the bottom line is you do not want large numbers of these animals for a number of reasons, number one being that cloned animals are generally unhealthy."

Here is a link to the whole article: http://news.yahoo.com/us-company-iowa-churns-100-cloned-cows-054827926.html

Happy 4'th of July to you as well this week! We have lots of 'natural' pork and chicken for your party/grilling needs this week. Come on out to the farm store! : )

Crunchy Farm Piglets

Our dozen piglets are loving being out in fresh air, sun, and most of all... pasture! It's so fun as a 'natural stewership' farmer to enjoy letting pigs be pigs and chickens be chickens and so on and so forth.

P.S. Although most of the pigs are already spoken for we do have a few half's left for a 'bulk pork' price if you are interested. It's my favorite meat!

The cost of chicken...

Well, here we go... Who knows the cost of chicken at the grocery store? Last I remember, it could be bought for somewhere around .89 cents per pound on sale. 89 cents!! How in the world can you grow a chicken and even cover the cost of feeding it for that price?!? And that, my friends, is what it comes down to. Feeding and caring for that chicken. There is plenty of reading to be done on the matter. "Poultry Prisons" is a quick read and "The blind, footless chickens of the future CAFOs" is another. Did you know that the USDA will soon allow chicken from China? Chinese chicken? I don't even enjoy talking or debating the subject, cause it just makes me sick. I did, however, want to touch on the matter of why does chicken raised by smaller farms cost so much more? Quality is a good word to describe it. Quality of food. Quality of treatment.

The life of a pasture raised chicken is miles different, then that of your grocery store chicken. First, it lives outside, in clean fresh air. Second, it gets to be a chicken and eat the bugs that hop around. Chickens also like to eat grass, which is not a widely known fact, but, yes, they do and they love it!
Quality of food. Chickens will eat just about anything you give them, so you can imagine if you are trying to produce the cheapest bird, you aren't going to be feeding them well. A pasture raised bird not only gets to eat the grass and bugs where they live, but also has fresh food brought to them daily.
Quality of treatment. These are living, breathing animals we are talking about and should be cared for as such. That is something we over look every time we buy a store bought chicken. We vote and say its okay every time we buy a bird treated that way. It looks so harmless just buying a chicken, but we are saying what your doing is good and I support you.

With that said, vote for someone you know who is doing a good job. Go to the farmers market, visit a farm. See what is done and how the animals are treated and what they are fed. It matters! Make a difference. And just remember, you really do get what you pay for!

~Ruth

We are NOW taking reservations for spring piglets here on the farm!

Fill your freezer this year with good, healthy, humanely raised, delicious pork! Every year the taste is so much better than store bought, and the pigs enjoy their lives while they're here, unlike the meat you buy in the supermarket. These pigs will be raised free range. Living in a natural environment gives them access to the things pigs need and love.

We sell our pork by the pound as a whole or half a pig dressed hanging weight. Our pork is $3.50/lb from Crunchy Farm. After that there is also a processing fee and butcher fee which will total about $1.00/lb. A half pig is about 100lbs of pork and in the end will cost you about $4.50 a pound. Great bulk pork price!

*We require a $100 deposit per half a pig. Please call or email to reserve your pig as soon as possible. Will be picking up piglets from a local farm soon.

**Our grain is locally sourced with no antibiotics, no growth hormones, and is Non-GMO (genetically modified organism)

Stop by and visit our farm (and your pig) anytime and see for yourself the benefits of ‘local farm fresh’.
